Defense:  Dig and Quicks

Objectives:
Teach defense through repetitions.

  1. Defenders start in their base positions, middle hitter and setter start in their base blocking positions.
  2. Defenders release to their defensive positions for defending the outside hitter.
  3. Coach hits ball to one of the three defenders.
  4. Defender attempts to dig ball to the setter so the middle can run a successful (over the net and in) attack.
  5. After the dig, defenders move in to cover the middle hitter.
  6. Defenders return to base.
  7. Repeat until the middle can run a preset number of successful quick attacks.

Variations:

  1. Change the speed between the hits, the shorter the time the higher the difficulty.
  2. Mix hits, tip and rollshots.  Emphasize communication on defense by having players call the attack.
