Outside Hitters: Hitting Against The Flow

Objectives:
Practice hitting against the grain of the approach.

Figure 1

  1. Tosser tosses a ball to the hitter.
  2. Hitter approaches and hits the ball.
  3. Hitter hits the opposite direction from which the approach came.

With just a tosser and a hitter this drill can be done repeatedly with one hitter, in lines, or in small groups (between three and five).

Variations:
Add a blocker.

Figure 2
  1. Tosser tosses ball to the hitter.
  2. Hitter passes the ball to the setter.
  3. Setter sets ball to the hitter.
  4. Hitter approaches and hits the ball the opposite direction in which the hitter came.

This drill can be done with one hitter hitting repeatedly, in lines, or in small groups (between three and five).

Figure 3
This drill is the same as in Figure 2  with the addition of the blocker.  The blocker should front the hitter wherever they go.  For the hitter, they should focus on hitting the ball in the direction from which the blocker comes.

Figure 4
This drill is similar but the hitter attacks primarily from behind the setter.  The hitter can swing in front of the setter.  The goal is still to hit in the opposite direction from the attack comes.
