Outside Hitting Drills:  Shot Selection IFTE

Objectives:
To practice recognizing situations and hitting out them.

Inside - Outside: Cross - Line

  1. Tosser tosses a ball to either 1 or 2 position (1 being on the antennae 2 being about 5 feet in from the antennae).
  2. If toss is in 1 hitter must hit line, if the toss is in 2 the hitter must hit hard cross (along the right sideline).
  3. Score with a +1 for recognition of situation and reacting in the correct manner.  They still get a +1 if they hit out as long as the shot is the correct one.
  4. Repeat until hitter achieves predetermined goal (+3,+5).

Variation:
Increase difficulty of scoring by only giving +1 if shot is in, and a -1 if the hitter commits an error.

Inside - Outside: Tip Out -  Tip In
Same as above drill but change the attack on 1 and 2 positions.  On a 1 toss the hitter should tip in to the middle of the court, on a 2 toss the hitter should tip outside along the left sideline and short to the net.

Inside - Outside: One Foot -  Two Foot
Same as above drill but change the attack on 1 and 2 positions.  On a 1 the hitter should attack off a two foot take-off, on a 2 toss the hitter should hit off a one foot take-off.

Variations:
  1. Add one blocker (Right Front).
  2. Add two blockers (Middle and Right Front).
  3. Add defenders (Right Back first).

These variations add more difficulty to the drills, and make them more game-like.  It is important for the hitter to be able to just focus on making the correct attack for the situation so start without blockers and defenders and as they improve add more players.
