Wellness Center Policies

Equipment Use and Orientations

  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. If equipment is used in any other way, it may cause injury to the participant and others in the area.
  • Orientations are strongly recommended for individuals not familiar with the exercise equipment. Improper technique during exercise can cause injury or undue soreness. The Wellness Center staff are trained on proper form and technique with all the equipment on the fitness center. Walk-in orientations are available during hours of operation. 
  • The use of a barrier between you and the padded equipment is highly recommended.  WHY: The use of a barrier between your skin and the pad help decrease the risk of contracting a skin disease such as ringworm or impetigo.
  • Cardiovascular machine use is limited to 20 minutes when all machines are occupied.  WHY: To ensure all members have equal opportunity to use the equipment.

Membership Eligibility 
The USC Aiken Wellness Center is not a public facility.  There are a variety of ways you can be affiliated to obtain a membership.  Please contact Allison Hays about potential membership if you are interested at This email address is being protected from spambots. Guest Policy
Wellness Center members who are 18 years of age or older may sign in guests at a cost of $5 per day per guest.  Guests must be at least 18 years of age if the member is not the legal guardian. 

All guests who are 16 or older must complete an informed consent and sign in at the Wellness Center desk.  Members must remain in the building with their guests at all times and are responsible for the conduct of their guests.

Guest Passes
Guest passes entitle non-members access to the facility.  Guest passes are sold at the Wellness Center and Natatorium from the time the building opens until one hour prior to closing. Please bring correct change for the guest pass.
Fraudulent Use of ID
It is a violation of the Campus Recreation & Wellness policy to fraudulently use another person’s issued ID. Both parties involved (person whose name appears on the ID and the person attempting to enter) will receive an automatic suspension to the facilities, programs and services offered until judicial proceedings have occurred.  The incident will be reviewed and both parties will be notified if any changes in this sanction are advised. 

Sauna Rules

For Your Safety:

  • Notify staff prior to using the Sauna. The door to the sauna remains locked.  WHY:  For safety of the user.  Staff should be aware when someone is in the sauna and should periodically check the area.
  • Follow all posted rules.
  • Sauna will close 15 minutes prior to Wellness Center closing time. WHY:  To allow members adequate time to cool down and prepare to exit the area; To allow staff adequate time to shut down the sauna and lock up the facilities.
  • You should not use the sauna if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, diabetes, abnormal blood pressure, or other chronic diseases before consulting your physician.
  • Use of the Sauna for longer than 10 minutes is not advisable.
  • Use of the Sauna immediately following exercise, or while under the influence of alcohol, tranquilizers or other drugs that cause drowsiness or that effect blood pressure is not advised.
  • This is a dry sauna. Please do not pour water over the heating elements.
  • DO NOT place any objects on top of the heater.  WHY: FIRE HAZARD!
  • Heater gets extremely hot during operation and should not be touched or burns may result.
  • Towels or mats should always be used on benches and floor as perspiration otherwise penetrates the soft wood may cause stains or odor.
  • DO NOT leave any items in the sauna (magazines, etc.)   WHY: FIRE HAZARD!
  • Appropriate clothing must be worn – no nudity, no plastic sweat suits
  • Remove any metal objects (glasses, jewelry); WHY:  heat can damage the object or cause burns to the skin.
  • Shower before and after using the sauna, using no soaps or lotions;  WHY:  to allow perspiration.
  • Drink plenty of fluids before and after use to avoid dehydration
  • Never use if you are not feeling well. The sauna is not recommended for individuals that have a heart condition.
  • Exit immediately if you begin feeling sick and notify staff.
  • Be considerate of other users. This should be a relaxing experience for all – limit conversations, music, etc.
  • If you use a musical device in the sauna be sure to use head phones and make sure that it is durable for extreme temperatures
  • Cool down the body gradually prior to exiting, allowing the body to return to its normal state
  • Avoid a cold shower immediately after exiting the sauna

Natatorium Rules

  •  Swimming is only permitted when a lifeguard is on duty.  WHY: A lifeguard must be on duty to ensure the safety of all swimmers in the case of an emergency.
  • Persons with infectious or communicable diseases shall not be allowed to use the pool.  WHY: To keep the transfer of infectious or communicable diseases at a minimum.
  • All swimming apparel must be clean.  WHY: Clean swimming apparel helps maintain proper water chemical levels.
  • No spitting or pollution of the water will be allowed.  WHY: Keeping spit and other pollutants out of the pool helps maintain proper water chemical levels.
  • No running or horseplay will be permitted on the pool deck or in the pool.  WHY: Walking and proper behavior on the pool deck decreases the risk of injuries to swimmers and bystanders.
  • Objects that are hazardous to the pool or interfere with the operation of the pool may not be used at any time.  Keeping hazardous objects out of and away from the pool reduces the risk of damage to the pool’s filtration, heating and chemical systems.
  • Appropriate swim attire is required at all times.  WHY: Proper swim attire helps ensure the safety of swimmers and pool itself.
  • Individuals under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian while in the Natatorium.  WHY: Parent/guardians help keep minors safe.
  • All flotation devices/pool toys must be supplied by the Natatorium.   WHY: The supplies devices/pool toys are safe for pool and swimmers.
  • Food and drink items must be disposed of properly.  WHY: Properly disposed food and drink items help reduce the risk of pests and proper function of the pool.
  • No glass or sharp plastic items are permitted.  WHY: Glass and sharp objects are not permitted to reduce the risk of cuts or other abrasions in or around the pool.

Free Weight Areas

  • Allow others to work in when performing multiple sets.  WHY:  To be courteous of others and allow usage by all members.
  • Bar collars should be used to keep plates from sliding off.
  • Do not drop weights or equipment.
  • Deadlifts are to be done in the deadlift section.
  • Spotters are recommended for safety. Please ask for help if you need it.
  • Lifting chalk is not permitted.  WHY:  it creates a MESS!
  • Return all weights equipment to their proper locations.  WHY:  To help keep a neat facility and because other members or staff may not be able to lift/move heavy weight plates.
  • Keep weights and equipment off of the walking track and away from mirrors.  WHY: for walker safety and prevent damage to equipment/mirrors.

Cardiac Rehab

Cardiac Rehab participants will also follow the facility policies plus the following additional ones:

  • While enrolled in cardiac rehab, participants can only use the facility during the supervised cardiac rehab sessions. WHY: Participants have been referred to a supervised program and must attend only during those hours.
  • Participants cannot use the sauna, unless written permission from their referring physician.  WHY:  Health issues can be worsened by sauna use.
  • Participants are not allowed to use cell phones, music devices or reading material during their exercise session.  WHY:  Personal devices and reading material are distracting.  This can be a safety issue as participants are learning to use equipment, it hinders learning new equipment and learning individual sign/symptoms and limits communication with staff.

Group Fitness Class Policies

  • Proper footwear is required during fitness classes. Footwear is specific to the class formats as designated by the instructor.    WHY:  Proper footwear must be worn to protect the patron from injury.  Each class has a different standard for footwear.  The instructor will inform the patron if the footwear is not appropriate for the class.
  • Attending group fitness classes from start to finish is strongly recommended. WHY:  The proper warm up, aerobic phase and cool down is very important to decrease risk for injury. If you have to leave a class early, please make sure you cool down and stretch all the major muscle groups. 
  • Fitness classes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. WHY:  Each class has a set number of participants that it can hold due to room capacity or equipment needed for the class. 
  • The use of a towel or full T-shirt during exercises involving mats is strongly recommended.  WHY:  T-shirts or towels between your skin and the mat help decrease the risk of contracting a skin disease such as ringworm or impetigo.
  • All equipment is to remain in the Studio at all times.  WHY:  Equipment purchased for Group Fitness is meant to be used only for Group Fitness Classes.  This decreases the chance of this equipment disappearing. 

The Studio is not available for general use.  All classes must have an instructor or be reserved through USC Aiken's scheduling software.
