Campus Safety

A tornado warning will be received from weather alert radio, other media, Aiken County Sheriff or Aiken Public Safety, or someone on campus who sees a funnel cloud.

USC Aiken duty police officer or officer in charge, will immediately initiate a weather warning (emergency signal pulse wail tone) with prerecorded message "A tornado warning is in effect. Seek shelter now. Tune into local TV for information. Seek shelter now." Concurrently USC Aiken emergency web alert and text messaging will repeat the above message.

  1. Those outdoors will immediately seek shelter indoors going to the closest indoor weather related rally point (interior hallways on the lowest floor away from windows, doors and outside walls).
  2. Those indoors will immediately move to interior hallways on the lowest floor away from windows, doors and outside walls. Shelter can also be provided by interior bathrooms without windows.
  3. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine, or culvert and protect your head.
  4. When the storm passes, the officer in charge or Chancellor’s Office will initiate the emergency all clear tone (emergency pulse steady) with prerecorded message “All clear. The emergency is over. Restore normal operations. Check USC Aiken website for information.”  Concurrently USC Aiken emergency web alert and text messaging will repeat the above message and follow with any instructions from the Chancellor’s Office.
