The USC Aiken Alumni Association serves more than 16,000 alumni and seeks to have a board that reflects the diversity present within the alumni body. The one common trait of all candidates will be their ability to advance USC Aiken by engaging all alumni.

The Alumni Board is an advisory group for and represents the Alumni Association. The board is comprised of 15 members who must be active members (contribution of at least $25 made during the current fiscal year), and shall serve 2 year terms. The Board will have at least one representative from each of the two colleges and from each of the three professional schools. Members will be selected by the Executive Committee of the Alumni Board.

The Alumni Association

The USC Aiken Alumni Association serves all alumni of the University of South Carolina Aiken. The purpose of the association is to advance the best interests and well being of USC Aiken by engaging all alumni in the life of the institution through communication, programming, services, and volunteer opportunities.

The Alumni Board

The Alumni Board of the USC Aiken Alumni Association is a group of 15 alumni who serve the association in a leadership role. They have authority over the affairs of the USC Aiken Alumni Association and partner with the Alumni Relations Office to further the goals and the mission of the university. Board members serve on behalf of all alumni and serve two-year terms.

University of South Carolina Aiken Alumni Association Constitution

Revised and Approved December 2019

Preamble

We, former students of the University of South Carolina at Aiken (USCA), grateful for the privilege of having shared in that institution's ideals and mindful of the enrichment and opportunities brought to our lives through our association with USCA, do hereby constitute ourselves as the USCA Alumni Association and pledge to continue to develop and support USCA and the USCA Alumni Association through giving of our time, talents and resources.

Article I: Name

The name of this nonprofit organization shall be the USCA Alumni Association.

Article II: Purpose

The purpose of the USCA Alumni Association shall be to support the mutual interests of USCA and its Alumni through vigorous efforts to foster the resources of and opportunities offered by each organization, including providing and soliciting financial support for each organization.

Article III: Members

A. There shall be at least the following categories of membership in the USCA Alumni Association:

  1. Regular Members: Regular members shall consist of former students who have received a degree from USCA and who have paid the minimum annual contribution to the university set forth by the USCA Alumni Board. Graduating seniors who participate in the Senior Class gift program will also be considered Regular members.
  2. Associate Members: Associate Members shall consist of current USCA students, former students who did not receive a degree or friends of the university who have expressed an interest in supporting USCA Alumni Association activities. Associate Members must also pay the minimum annual contribution set forth by the USCA Alumni Board.

  3. Joint Members: Joint members shall consist of two married former students who have each received a degree from USCA who have jointly paid their minimum annual contribution set forth by the USCA Alumni Board. They shall have the status of Regular Members.

  4. Honorary Members: Honorary Members shall consist of individuals whose service to USCA is deserving of special recognition as determined by the USCA Alumni Board. (These individuals do not have to make an annual contribution.)

  5. Active Members: Active Members shall consist of Regular, Associate and Joint Members who have paid the minimum annual contribution set by the USCA Alumni Board and are in good standing.

  6. Other levels of membership may be established by action of the USCA Alumni Board based upon financial contributions, service or other standards.

B. The minimum annual contribution shall be set forth by the USCA Alumni Board.

Article IV: Officers

A. Association Officers

  1. President: The President shall preside at all meetings of the Alumni Association, Alumni Board, and Executive Committee, appoint members and chairpersons of standing committees, except as otherwise provided herein, and ad hoc committees as needed; appoint persons to fill temporarily any office that becomes vacant; perform such other duties as are provided for in this constitution; and perform any other duties necessarily implied herein. This is a two-year term.
  2. Vice President: The Vice President shall serve for the President during any absences and become President in the event of a vacancy in the office of President. The Vice President shall be a member of the Alumni Board and the Executive Committee. This is a two-year term.

  3. Secretary/Treasurer: The Secretary/Treasurer shall take all minutes of all regular meetings of the Alumni Board and the Executive Committee; coordinate email correspondence to disseminate meeting minutes, report on all scholarship matters including fundraising totals, budgets, and scholarship recipient correspondence; perform such other duties as assigned by the President; and shall be a member of the Alumni Board and Executive Committee.

  4. Immediate Past President: The Immediate Past President shall serve as a mentor to the President, provide support and guidance to the committee chairs, perform such duties as assigned by the President and shall be a member of the Alumni Board and the Executive Committee.

  5. Ex-Officio Officers: The Ex-Officio Officers shall include:

    1. The USCA Vice Chancellor for University Advancement
    2. The USCA Director of Alumni Relations (Shall serve as a coordinator to the USCA Alumni Association and shall assist the Association, its officers, and members in implementing programs and activities undertaken by the Association. The Director shall be employed by the University and selected according to University hiring policies.)

B. Terms of Officers

  1. The President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer shall serve terms of two (2) years.
  2. The Immediate Past President shall serve a term of one (1) year.

C. Election of Officers

  1. The President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer shall be elected every other year, at the final annual meeting of the USCA Alumni Association by a majority of those active members attending that meeting, or voting in writing by email or other written means, received by the Secretary prior to the meeting. There shall be only one vote per Active Member allowed.

  2. Prior to the Final Meeting, a Nominating Committee appointed by the Executive Committee. composed of at least three members of the Alumni Board shall compile and present in writing a slate of officers to the active members of the Board at least two weeks prior to the final meeting.
    1. All nominees must be Active Members of the USCA Alumni Association.
    2. All nominees so presented must give their prior consent to have their names placed in nomination.
    3. Any active member of the Association attending the final meeting is eligible for nomination from the floor to an office. 

D. Vacancies

  1. In addition the provisions in IV.A. 1., a vacancy in the existing terms of any Association office, except President, shall be filled by appointment of the President until the next Annual or Special Association Meeting.

  2. At the Final Meeting a permanent successor shall be elected by majority vote as provided in IV.C. herein above. 

Article V: Alumni Board

A. The Alumni Board shall be an advisory council for and represent the Alumni Association in all matters; carry out the mission of the Association; receive and act on reports; set annual fees for Active Membership in the Association; establish levels of membership in addition to those provided herein above; and carry out such other duties and responsibilities as are necessary for the functioning of the Association. Ideally the Alumni Board will be comprised of fifteen (15) members who must be active members of the Association and shall serve terms of two (2) years.

B. Members

  1. Members shall be appointed to the Alumni Board by the Executive Committee.
  2. The Alumni Board should strive to have representatives from each of the colleges and professional schools.

  3. Other at-large members may be appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Alumni Board. The Alumni Board shall strive to achieve a diversity of membership in the Alumni Council that reflects the diversity of current and former students of USCA.

  4. The Presidents (or a designee) from any approved Alumni Council (see Amendment I) shall serve as at-large members to the Alumni Board.

  5. In the event that a Board member is unable to complete his/her duties, the Alumni Board shall nominate a replacement for that vacancy. The actions of replacing a Board member and adding a replacement member shall be accomplished by the affirmative vote of a majority of the members of the Alumni Board voting.

  6. Ex-Officio members shall include the following:

    1. Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and External Relations

    2. Director of Alumni Relations

C. Voting

  1. With the exception of the presiding officer and ex-officio members, all members of the Board shall have voting privileges. The presiding officer may vote to break a tie.

  2. All issues considered by the Alumni Board shall be decided by a majority vote of those present, except as otherwise specifically provided herein.

D. Meetings

  1. The Alumni Board shall meet not less than four (4) times per year. Such regular meetings shall be held at a time and place approved by the Executive Committee.

  2. Special meetings may be called by the President, a majority vote of the Executive Committee, or by 25% of the Alumni Board.

  3. A simple majority of the Alumni Board shall constitute a quorum for conducting business at regular or special meetings.

E. Standing Committees

  1. The Alumni Board shall include the following standing committees appointed by the Executive Committee. Meetings of committees will be called by their respective chairpersons. Such committees shall consist of the following:

    1. Member Benefits and Scholarship Committee,

    2. Student and Alumni Engagement Committee,

    3. Fundraising and Young Alumni Committee,

    4. Legislative and Bylaws Committee,
    5. Such ad hoc committees as may be appointed by the President.

Article VI: Executive Committee

The Executive Committee shall consist of the Association President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Immediate Past President. A simple majority of the Executive Committee shall constitute a quorum for conducting business. Meetings of the Executive Committee may be called by the Director of Alumni Relations, President or any two members of the committee.  The Executive committee shall have the responsibility for establishing policy and strategic direction for the USCA Alumni Association.  If necessary, the Executive Committee shall have the authority to make decisions during the interim between meetings of the Board.

The Executive Committee shall meet when deemed necessary by that committee.

Article VII: Association Meeting

A. Annual Meeting

  1. The USCA Alumni Association may hold an Annual Meeting on a date and at a place approved by the Executive Board.

  2. Special meetings of the Association may be called by the Executive Committee or by the petition or vote of 25% of the members of the Alumni Board.

B. Notice of Meetings

  1. At least ten (10) days’ notice of the Annual or any special meeting of the Association shall be given to all active members. Such notice shall contain a listing of the matters to be considered at the meeting.

  2. No other agenda items may be introduced at the meeting, except on the vote of two thirds (2/3) of the active members attending the meeting.

C. Quorum

  1. The quorum necessary to conduct the business of the Alumni Association shall be the number of active members present at the meeting.
  2. Members unable to attend the meeting may submit their votes by a written, signed proxy received by the Secretary/Treasurer prior to the Annual Meeting. 

Article VIII: Parliamentary Authority

All meetings of the Alumni Association, Alumni Board, Executive Committee, Standing Committees and Ad Hoc Committees shall be conducted pursuant to the most current edition in effect at the time of Robert's Rules of Order, unless such is waived by unanimous consent of the members attending the meeting.

Article IX: Amendments

This Constitution may be altered, amended or repealed in whole or in part by a vote of at least two-thirds (2/3) of the active members of the Alumni Board attending an Regular or Special meeting. Written votes received by the Executive Board prior to the Regular or Special Meeting may be accepted if an Active Board Member is unable to attend the meeting. No such amendment may be considered unless fourteen (14) days prior notice of the meeting and a written explanation of the amendments are provided to all active members of the Alumni Board.

Amendment I: Councils of the Alumni Association 
Passed May 14, 1999

Councils of the Alumni Association may be formed based on academic discipline, geographic location, or other special interests. Policies regarding governance, programming, and financing of such Councils will be set by the Alumni Board within the following parameters:

  1. Approval to form a Council must be granted by the Alumni Board, which also shall have the power to disband a Council.

  2. The Alumni Board will consider forming a Council after receiving a written request to do so by five Alumni Association members in good standing who claim an affinity with a particular academic department, geographic location, or special interest.

  3. The Alumni Board may provide financial support during the Council's formative phase, and may attach obligations for the use of the money.

  4. The Alumni Board shall have the authority to set aside a portion of funds raised by each Council for use by that particular Council.

  5. The Alumni Board shall appoint a member in good standing to serve as a liaison to a Council, and as an ex-officio member of the Council’s governing body.

  6. An Alumni Council shall refer to itself in all publications and correspondence as a "Council of the USCA Alumni Association."

University of South Carolina Aiken Alumni Association Strategic Plan

  1. Overview
    • Background: The USCA Alumni Association was started in 1974 by a handful of loyal alumni who wanted to see USC Aiken prosper. We, former students of the University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA), are grateful for the privilege of having shared in that institution’s ideals and are mindful of the enrichment and opportunities brought to our lives through our association with USCA. The USCA Alumni Association pledges to continue to develop and support USCA through the giving of our time, talents, and resources.
    • Purpose:  The purpose of the USCA Alumni Association shall be to support the mutual interests of USCA and its Alumni through vigorous efforts to foster the resources of and opportunities offered by each organization, including providing and soliciting financial support for each organization.
    • Membership: Active membership consists of Regular, Associate, and Lifetime members who are current in paying their annual contribution. Honorary memberships are awarded to individuals who deserve special recognition for their service to the university. Regular memberships (Single and Joint) are for those who have earned a degree from USCA (Associate, Undergraduate, or Graduate). Associate memberships are for students who attended the university, but did not earn a degree, or friends who wish to support the university. Lifetime memberships (single or joint) are for Regular or Associate members.
    • The Alumni Executive Board: The Board serves as the policy making and executive body of the Association and has the following duties:
      • Coordinates the planning of events and activities sponsored by the Association;
      • Makes a periodic report of its activities to the alumni body;
      • Creates by-laws and regulations as deemed necessary for the transaction of the business of the Board and the Association;
      • Advises the Chancellor of the University on ways and means for improving relationships with the alumni body;
      • Determines policies and procedures for administering the finances of the Association.
      • The Executive Board of the USCA Alumni Association consists of a possible total of 15 members who serve staggered two-year terms.  Members represent different colleges, professional schools, the athletic program, non-traditional students, minorities, as well as members at large.
    • USCA Alumni Creed:  “We believe that as Alumni, we have a special relationship with our Alma Mater that represents a lifetime commitment in the fulfillment of our dreams and aspirations.  As alumni, we will represent the result of her mission and the embodiment of her spirit in the world.  What she is, we are; what she becomes, we become.  Because we are the emerging essence of our institution, we will strive to enhance this special relationship between students, alumni and friends so that the heritage of our Alma Mater will always be a part of our lives.”
  2. USC Aiken Mission Statement: The University of South Carolina Aiken is a comprehensive institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and professional disciplines. All programs of study are grounded in a strong liberal arts and sciences curriculum. USC Aiken is distinguished by its commitment to transformative teaching made possible through high impact learning practices, undergraduate research, small classes, and individual attention. The University encourages excellence in research and creative pursuits and prepares students for success by challenging them to think critically and creatively, to communicate effectively, to learn independently, and to acquire breadth and depth of interdisciplinary knowledge. USC Aiken attracts students from South Carolina, the United States, and the world to form a diverse community of individuals engaged in educational experiences and service necessary for the pursuit of meaningful work in an enlightened, inclusive, and economically vibrant society. 3.  Strategic Plan
  • Keeping the institution’s mission and values in mind, as well as the Association’s purpose and creed, we put forth the following goals and objectives to help focus the Alumni Executive Board’s time, energy, and resources. The Board will assess the progress towards each goal annually at an August Alumni Retreat.
    • Goal One: Increase overall alumni involvement with the Association and the institution.
    • Goal Two: Implement alumni events that will generate interest in, participation in, and funds for the Alumni Association.
    • Goal Three: Promote citizenship among members of the Alumni Association.
USC Aiken’s reputation continues to grow in the state, the Southeast, and nationally. With the addition of several new degree programs and academic offerings, we have increased student enrollment to almost 3,500 students. One of our major efforts is to reach out to alumni and engage them with their alma mater. Consistent with and in support of the university's strategic plan, Leading Forward, the Alumni Office has developed and are implementing four specific goals, which we refer to as M.E.R.G.E:
  • Increasing Membership: Increase annual membership to 8%.
  • Engaging our Alumni and Students: Networking with one another, current students and the university.
  • Student Retention and Recruitment: Increase participation in student retention and recruitment activities.
  • Increase the Giving Rate and Involving Everyone: Increase the giving opportunities of our alumni. There is a place for everyone to use their talents, donate their time and/or gifts to assist their alma mater.

  • Share ideas and react to proposals about how best to engage alumni in USC Aiken’s work, and promote interest among alumni in attending alumni events;
  • Reach out to friends, neighbors, colleagues and associates to identify USC Aiken alumni and encourage their involvement in the association and its chartered organizations.
  • Attend board meetings in person or by special arrangement and participate in teleconferences as needed to discuss alumni association activities;
  • Participate regularly in alumni activities on campus, in South Carolina, or in their region.

Nominate an alum now!

Each year, distinguished alumni who embrace the university's values —character, citizenship, curiosity, and collegiality— are selected to be part of USCA’s Core 4. 

Who is Eligible?

Individuals who have obtained an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree from USC Aiken. 

Alumni who have completed a substantial amount of coursework but did not graduate (ie…Engineering majors before that degree being offered at our campus, Banksia era transfer students, etc..) are also eligible for nomination.

Graduates and alumni must embrace the university values of character, citizenship, curiosity, and collegiality.

Self-nominations will not be accepted. Current Alumni Board members are ineligible for this award. 

The Process

  1. Each year from October 1 - January 1, the Alumni Executive Board will collect nominations via the Core 4 Nomination Form.
  2. Nominations are reviewed, and eligible nominees are contacted to accept the nomination.
  3. Winners will be announced at USC Aiken’s Homecoming Alumni Reception. Plaques will be awarded during an on-court ceremony during the game.
