Research has shown that life beyond high school for individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) is dismal. Only 18% of adults with ID are competitively employed1, and their average yearly income is below the poverty line at $10,279.2 Both of those factors directly impact their ability to live independently, with only 20% of adults with ID living in their own home, and a majority living in community-based settings (32%) or with family (36%).3

Completing postsecondary programs is known to improve the quality of life of individuals with ID, with those who attended (not necessarily completed) these types of programs being more likely to be employed and earn higher wages.2

Despite that, the cost of programs like this can prevent some families from participating. With your support, students with ID actually can go to college, live independently, and maintain meaningful employment.
