About the Program

The USC Aiken Youth Safe Haven is a community outreach program designed as a partnership between University of South Carolina Aiken, the City of Aiken Department of Public Safety, and the Aiken County Public School District to serve middle school youth living in economically-disadvantaged neighborhoods.  Funded through a generous grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, the goal of the program is to create safer communities by increasing protective factors and promoting positive outcomes for youth through education, mentoring, and enhanced law enforcement-community relations.

The USC Aiken Youth Safe Haven accomplishes its goal by operating easily accessible, community-based after-school programs within low-income neighborhoods.  Participating middle school youth will have access to a safe space within their neighborhood where they can complete homework, participate in fun activities, and positively interact with local Public Safety officers and other caring adults.  The first USC Aiken Youth Safe Haven will be located within the neighborhood of Crosland Park, less than a ten minute drive from both the University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Middle School.  Thanks to a grant graciously awarded by the local United Way of Aiken County Women’s Leadership Council, meals and snacks will also be provided to youth at this location.
