Dr. Kathleen (Katie) Kalpin Smith received her PhD and MA in English from the University of California at Davis and her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She joined the UofSC Aiken English faculty in 2006. She currently holds a GL Toole chair in Literature.
She specializes in the English early modern period, with particular interest in drama, cultural studies, and gender studies. She has published articles on the work of English Renaissance dramatists, including Shakespeare, as well as in the areas of early modern women and pedagogy. In addition to scholarly journal articles, she has published two books. One is an edition of Shakespeare’s play All’s Well That Ends Well, for the New Kittredge Shakespeare Edition collection. The other is a scholarly monograph, Gender, Speech, and Audience Reception in Early Modern England from Routledge University Press.
The latter work, on representations of women’s speech in dramatic and non-dramatic texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, investigates the ways in which women are depicted as interacting with audiences during a speech exchange.
She teaches courses in Composition, The British Literature Survey, The English Renaissance, Shakespeare, and Women's Literature. She currently co-sponsors the department’s honor society, Sigma Tau Delta. She has also taught courses within the USCA Honors Program and has served as a sponsor for the USC Magellan Scholars Program; she is available to field questions from students about opportunities for undergraduate research and enrichment.
