About the Department
The primary mission of the Department of Diversity Initiatives is to develop a strong sense of belonging in the students, staff, and faculty that make up the UofSC Aiken community. In line with the university's core value of collegiality, the Department of Diversity Initiatives fosters institutional equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging by cultivating opportunities to discuss difference, raising awareness and providing tools to identify and overcome gaps in understanding to ensure inclusive excellence both at the university, the larger Aiken community, and the entire state of South Carolina.
As we come together as a learning community, we acknowledge the land we live, learn and work on by naming the Westo, Sioux, Cherokee and Iroquois Peoples upon whose unceded and stolen territory the university stands. We further acknowledge the enslaved peoples, primarily of African descent, whose labor built much of the local community. Today more than 13,000 Native Americans inhabit the state of South Carolina.
As we continue to work towards a more inclusive campus community, we acknowledge our responsibility to educate our community about Native peoples and our university’s history with them.
